Website Marketing

Website marketing and SEO (search engine optimisation):
There are at least two types of website marketing strategies that you should be familiar with if you are launching or growing a web based business - natural ranking and sponsored links.

Natural Rankings are the bulk of the results you get from searching a search engine like Google. Natural ranking results appear in the main area of your browser window. Sponsored links appear at the very top in a yellow row and also appear at the right hand side of the browser window.

Natural rankings are awarded automatically by Google's proprietary search engine algorithm based on a range of 'votes' that different elements of your website gets judged on. Only Google knows the actual method of pleasing all the criteria to be ranked highly however, through trial and error many web designers now feel they have a solid understanding of the fundamental aspects.

Sponsored links are a little more predictable and in some markets are like a new gold-rush allowing small companies to advertise big, for a fraction of the cost of traditional methods. Take the Yellow Pages for example. A half page colour ad will cost about $10K - $30K depending on which city you are in. Yet a budget of $10K a year spent on a Google Adwords or equivalent campaign may reach infinitely more people and return a much higher return on advertising investment.

Online marketing is not for every business and the full range of advertising methods for your specific market should be considered before parting with your advertising/marketing budget.

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation):
If you want to be found when someone searches for your product or service via Google, MSN, and Yahoo then it's a very good idea to have your website built with SEO in mind.

SEO has some fundamental do's and don'ts that actually make perfect sense when it comes to logically structuring data, or in this case, website content. Here are the Do's:

  • Ensure the website is free from programming errors
  • Correctly structure the web page designs to the latest standards
  • Construct the meta-tag information with care
  • Have the web copy written grammatically correct and appealing
  • Write titles and copy around the most popular related key phrases
  • Submit the website to search engines and online directories
  • Build 'back-links' or links from related websites pointing to yours
  • Use statistics software and act on the results
  • Remember to design for humans so they will stay once they find you

And here are the Don'ts:

  • Participate in 'link-farms' or other 'black-hat' methods
  • Over-use your keywords too much compared to other text
  • Duplicate your website and simply change the graphics
  • Cut and paste from existing websites (Google punishes copied text)
  • Get an ugly site for the sake of SEO compliance
